The roots, stems, leaves, seed pods, resin and flowers are considered to be healing herbs in Ayurvedic (traditional Indian healing system) and Unani (traditional Middle Eastern healing system) folk medicine.

The plant contains 4-hydroxymellein, vanillin, moringine, moringinine, bayrenol, indole acetic acid, indole acetonitrile, benzylisothiocyanate, pterygospermin, cartotene, known flavanoids, polysaccharide, protein components, various essential amino acids, minerals and vitamins, fatty acids and spirochin.
